I cheated a bit and looked it up. Is it a hedge apple/monkey brains. It really does look like yellow brains!
Does anything eat it? More importantly could I eat it?

I believe that people eat it, but I've smelled it and I'm not eating it.

We were just studying these! I didn't read where people ate hedge apples but we did find a book that states people in the early 1900's would place the apples around their house and they are a natural pest repellent. You would often find them sitting on people's porches close to doors. It's the smell that keeps the pests away. We thought they were very interesting.

We call them osage oranges here in Kentucky (and in Indiana, too).
