Science Experiment of the Week

Waxy Coating: This was a favorite of ours from several weeks ago...

  • paper towel, cut in the shape of two leaves
  • wax paper, one about 6"x11", folded in half
  • paper clip

Wet both the paper towel leaves. Cover one with the wax paper and use the paper clip to secure it. Put both in a dish and set it in the sun. Check them after 40 min. The leaf in the wax paper should still be damp while the other leave should be dry. This shows how the waxy coating on leaves in the desert helps them to retain water. You could check out a book from the library about the desert(such as Desert Plants), read it and then do the experiment. Hope you enjoy!

Blessings...
